Fellows Wrap Up
The Fellows Program has Finished!
First off, sorry for not posting an update for a while. After we returned from Belize, life got pretty busy. Hannah accepted a job in Petersburg, seminary classes were wrapping up, and my job and job search kept me very busy.
I want to walk you through this update in the order that things occurred. First I’ll give you an update from our Belize trip, then I will talk about the program wrapping up, and lastly I will give you my key takeaways from the last year I’ve spent in the Blue Ridge Fellows Program.
Belize 2025!
Belize is BEAUTIFUL!
As part of the Blue Ridge Fellows program, each year the fellows take a trip to Belize to support a School that CHS has strong connections to.
The trip was a week long and was one of the best weeks of the year. We had a lot of traveling to get to Toledo Christian Academy in Toledo, Belize. The school is on a beautiful piece of land with coconut trees, pineapple plants, and so much more. We stayed in a mission house with no AC but a nice fan that kept us cool(ish) during the night. The wildlife in Belize is really cool. They have howler monkeys, iguanas, tarantulas, jaguars, and scorpions. The weather was nice, mid 80s most of the time but it was a nice break from the cold weather in Roanoke.
The goal of our trip was to support and encourage the Toledo Christian Academy. They are a light in their village. When most schools are going astray (often following wht they see going on in America), TCA has chosen to stand firm in what they teach their kids. Not only do the kids get an excellent education, but they also hear about Jesus and grow in their personal relationships with Him. During our trip, we got to spend time with the kids, teaching bible lessons and playing with them during breaks. We also helped the school through several service projects including pressure washing, painting, yardwork, and trash runs. It was messy work but I believe it was a huge blessing to the school.
God really taught me a lot on this trip. My biggest take away was to see how God can use small actions to make a big difference. Our first task when we arrived was to pick up sticks throughout the campus. This task threw me off a little because it seemed so insignificant. I thought that I should be making a “bigger” difference during my trip than to just be picking up sticks. As the week ended however, we heard from the principal of TCA about how trips like ours are keeping the school open and keeping the light on in their village. Though I may not see it during my trip, God uses small acts to make big differenced in peoples lives. It was so cool to see how TCA had become a community center for everyone around. Not only do they minister and help their students, but they do outreaches and projects to bless the entire village around them.
Please pray for TCA in Belize to continue to be the light God has empowered them to be in their village.
The Last Couple Months of the Blue Ridge Fellows
This second half of the program has been just as busy and fruitful as the first. We did a deep dive into Calvinism and free will, we studied in seminary the doctrine of sin and God’s attributes, and so much more.
We had so many deep conversations about some of life’s biggest questions and we were able to explore their answers through a biblical lens. Sometimes, we could even have these conversations in God’s beautiful creation like we did in the picture to the left on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
We also continued to teach our Sunday school class. They have been such a blessing. At the beginning of the program, I wasn’t too sure about my ability to affectively teach 5th and 6th graders the bible. Today, I’m still unsure of my ability to teach affectively but I have been able to see first hand the work God is doing in these kid’s lives. They have such a love for Jesus and for God’s word, they ask really good deep questions as we study the old Testiment together, and they have been so much fun to be around. God taught me that He can use my “worst” and “best” Sunday school lessons to work in the hearts of those around me.
Hannah and I will miss the kids a lot.
What has God taught you through the program?
This program has genuinely been one of the biggest blessings in my life.
Words really cannot express how much God has used this program to grow me spiritually and to teach me so many things about God and His character. God has shown me that He is a provider, that He cares for even my smallest needs, and that He loves to show Himself mighty in all situations.
God has not only filled but overfilled my cup this past year. There were definitely times that were difficult but in the end, God has always shown himself to be in control and has shown His love for me. Weather it’s housing, finances, seminary, jobs, friends, or marriage, God has continued to show Himself faithful.
Some key takeaways from the program are: learning about God’s attributes in seminary, relearning how to read the bible in a way that puts Christ at the center (not ourselves), exploring what happened in our culture and how can we love those around us that seem so lost, finding biblical answers to some of the hardest questions, making new friends with other young adults in the Roanoke area, being adopted by my hosts, Charlie and Bonnie Tull, and the community of Church of the Holy Spirit.
The Church has been one of the best parts of the program. I’ve never experienced such love and hospitality in a church as I have with CHS. Charlie taught me one of my biggest lessons which is to live life with an open hand. Allow God to give and take away because everything we “own” is His anyway. Charlie lives this out as he hosted me the first half of the year. I’ve never experienced hospitality like I have this year and it has absolutely changed me and changed how I want to live in the future. I want to live with an open hand, an open heart, and radical love for others.
I can honestly say this program has changed my life. Because of this program, I am a better husband, friend, employee, and church member. And because of this program, I am closer to Christ and more equipped to share Him with everyone I encounter in my lifetime.
What’s next and Thank you!!
So what’s next?
As this program comes to an end, it closes one chapter of my life but opens another. As many of you know, Hannah graduated from Virginia Tech about the same time as the Fellows program ended. She excepted a job in Petersburg, Virginia working as an Engineer at a steel mill. Since my work will likely be remote, we decided to move to the Richmond area in June. Before we move, however, we have decided to take 3 weeks and travel the country in our camper van (I’m actually in Montana as I’m writing this).
Please pray that God would continue to provide as we step into this next chapter. Please pray for a job to be finalized for myself whether it continuing with Carilion or moving on to another company. And please pray for safety as Hannah and I continue to travel across this beautiful country.
As always, thank y’all for your prayer and support. I couldn’t have done this program without you and I wouldn’t be the same person I am today without your generous outpouring of wisdom, prayers, and investment. Your continued financial support has made this year possible. Thank you for your generosity and love.
Revelation 7: 9-12
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
February 2025 / We're Going To Belize!
February and Belize!
This will be a shorter update as we are in the last couple days before we take our missions trip to Belize!
February has been filled with all kinds of fun but also with a lot of learning as we continue our studies and our seminary class. God continues to be faithful and continues to provide in the most unexpected ways. I can’t wait to see what He does through our time in Belize!
What have you been learning?
This past month has been one of the months I feel like God has been teaching me so many things. I’ve really enjoyed our Systematic Theology class where we get to tackle big theological questions. The past few months we have been learning about the different ways God shows us who He is. This could be through his word, through others, or simply through the creation He has put around us. It has really caused me to slow down and enjoy His presence even in the little things. So often we take His beautiful creation for granted. We look at the mountains, or a sunset, and forget about the artist and creator who made these things to bring Glory to His name.
Missions Trip to Belize!
It’s finally time for the long awaited missions trip to Belize!
For those of you that don’t know, our church in Roanoke (CHS), has some missionaries in Belize. They help run a Christian school for children and part of the fellows program is to take a short-term missions trip to help out the missionaries already working among the community in Belize.
We leave this Sunday! and will fly back the following weekend. We are now in last minute packing mode, preparing lessons, supplies, and our hearts as we go to serve the people in Belize. We will be helping teach some classes to the kids, spend time loving and caring for them, and also serve the current missionaries through renovations of the campus. Please pray for us as we share God’s love, but more importantly, share the Gospel with the people in Belize.
Prayer requests:
Safe travels to and from Belize.
For the kids who go to the school to have soften hearts to hear the Gospel.
For the current missionaries that run the school, that our trip would be a blessing to them, giving them a chance to rest and catch up with the continuous hard work they do for the Kingdom.
Safety for the team from sickness and from the sun (being on the equator means lots of sunscreen!)
Philippians 4: 4-7
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
January 2025
Welcome to a NEW year!
Happy New Year and welcome to 2025. God has been so faithful and kind the last year and I can’t wait to see what He will do in the next 12 months.
A lot has changed since the last update I gave so I will try to catch everyone up. We are officially more than half way through the Blue Ridge Fellows Program, I got married on December 28th, we started our next semester of seminary, and God continues to provide for Hannah and I in unexpected ways.
We’re MARRIED!
After months of planning, the best day of our lives finally came. December 28th, 2025, Hannah and I got married. It was so nice to see family and friends come out to support us. God has blessed us with an incredible community to celebrate with. THANK YOU to everyone who made our day so so special.
What does 2025 look like for the Fellows?
The Blue Ridge Fellows program runs from September 2024 to May 2025, so we only have a few more months before the program wraps up!
2025 is going to be a busy year for us. We are taking another seminary class, going on a missions trip to Belize, teaching more Sunday school lessons at Church of the Holy Spirit, as well as continuing with our weekly meetings and bible studies.
One of the most exciting things from that list is the missions trip to Belize. As many of you know, I have always had a heart for missions and have taken short term mission trips before. During each trip, God has taught me so many things about himself and his people. Every time I come back a different man. I am so excited to be a blessing to the people of Belize, to share God’s love with the people there, and to help the long-term missionaries that are based there. Oh… and Hannah gets to come!!!
Please be praying for our trip. Pray that God would continue to provide for us, that He would prepare our hearts as well are the hearts of the people we will interact with in Belize. I look forward to seeing what He does there!
What is seminary like this year?
This semester class is Christian Theology I.
This is a comprehensive study of the major doctrines of the Christian faith from the point of the view of those who are within the Christian church. The nature of theology, its methods and claims will be discussed and assessed. We study the major Christian doctrines in their mutual relationships: revelation, God, creation, providence, humanity, and sin.
What has God been teaching you?
God has been teaching me a lot about godly decision making. So often we get too caught up worrying about what we think God’s “will” is for our lives that we end up getting stuck and not going anywhere.
In Genesis 12:1, God says “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.”
He doesn’t lay out His whole plan before Abraham goes. God tells Abraham to first GO, then He will show him the land. Too often we wait for God to tell us where we are going before we actually GO. Now, God can choose to reveal His direct plan and will but more often than not He simply calls us to GO, take a step of faith, and trust that He will be guide you to the land He will show us.
Thank you!!
As always, thank you so much for your continud support. God has proven himself so faithful in countless ways. I am so grateful to be able to participate in this program and it’s all because God provided for me through your support.
Philippians 4: 4-7
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
November/December 2024
It’s the most wonderful time of the year
Sorry for the bit of delay getting the next update out! Life has been a bit crazy.. but in a good way. God continues to shine his blessings upon me and the program. I’m so grateful for each of you. Please take a couple minutes to read the update below and see what God is doing in my life.
Fun Activities!
In the fellows program we do a lot of learning and studying, but we also have a lot of fun. We enjoy going on hikes and being outside in the beautiful blue ridge valley.
However, since it has gotten pretty cold, we have found fun things to do inside. We like playing card games and having jam sessions.
Here is a quick video of a worship night we did at my brothers house.
The Fellows Initiative Conference
Early November, we had the opportunity to travel to Washington DC for the yearly Fellows Initiative Conference or TFI conference. It’s a 2 day conference where Fellows programs from all over the nation come together to worship and learn from the word.
We learned how we were to live our lives with an eternal mindset. It is so easy to get caught up in this temporary world. Our culture wants to maximize our comfort and happiness in THIS WORLD. Whiles this isn’t always bad, we should live for the world to come. Living with an eternal perspective means taking time to slow down and serve where God has you. We so often are so caught up in this world, we forget about our neighbors, our co-workers, and our family. It is so important for us to slow down and love the LORD with all our heart and also love our neighbor as ourselves.
God wants us to witness and share the Gospel with the people he puts around us. My goal is to live my life always seeking opportunity to share His love with others.
Oh… We also had some fun when we went up there. Here’s a couple pictures!
What else is God doing in your life?
As many of you know, I’m going to have a very busy but extremely amazing last few weeks of the year. In just a couple weeks, I will marry my best friend!
God has blessed Hannah and I in so many ways. It has been so cool to see God piece everything together to allow us to get married in December. He is constantly providing for us and continually blowing my mind with how incredible His plan has been for my life. Year after year, month after month, and day after day, God has proved himself trustworthy and generous. I’m so excited spend the rest of my life with the incredible woman God has given to me. As we start our adventure together, we have already seen God’s provision in so many ways.
One of the biggest ways God has shown his provision is by giving us a place to stay while I finish the program. Blue Ridge Fellows was recently donated a house to use for housing future fellows. It was going to be ready for this year but ended up being pushed back. Countless volunteers have been spending hundreds of hours, gutting, cleaning, repairing, painting, plumbing, wiring, landscaping, and more so the house can bless future fellows. We are so grateful for all the hard work that has gone into the house. BRF has been gracious enough to allow Hannah and I to have the house to ourselves for the remainder of the program!
We are going to start moving stuff in this weekend and are so excited to have such a beautiful house as the first place we get to call home together.
Thank you!!
As we enter the Holiday season, I can’t help but feel overwhelmingly grateful for all of your prayer and support. God is doing so many great things in my life and I’m so grateful for friends and family like you who have generously supported me and allowed me to participate in the program.
Below is a verse that we studied that shows the importance of living with an eternal mindset.
Here is a quick video from the Jazzy Christmas Jam we had at the church as an outreach to the community. I hope y’all have an VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
2 Peter 3: 8-10
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish. 10 But the day of the Lord with come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
October 2024
Two Months in Already???
What a blessing this program has been!
As the first couple months have come and gone, I can already see God working in my life and the loves of those around me. It is so clear that God has placed me exactly where He wants me and the perfect time. I am so grateful for His plan and how He has used each of you to help support me and get me where I am today. I couldn’t be here without you!
This month has brought many new adventures, friends, and treasured moments.
Fellow Adventures!
As we have gotten to get to know one another, we have quickly learned that we each love being outdoors and doing things together. Weather that is pickleball, hiking, running, walking, or taking crazy trips to explore the area around us, we have thoroughly enjoyed being in the Blue Ridge Valley
One of the coolest things we were able to do was hike at the New River Gorge (Pictured on the right). The bridge there is the longest single arching bridge in the western hemisphere and the 3rd longest in the world.
Especially in the last couple months, we have been able to experience God’s incredible creation through the outdoors. Roanoke is absolutely beautiful with all the tress changing color.
So… How’s the job going?
My job at Carilion has gotten off to a great start. As I mentioned before, I am working part time on Carilion’s Web Development Team. This means I am on the team that is directly working with all of Carilion’s websites. This includes carilionclinic, carilionwellness, velocitycare, and more. To be more specific on what I do, I am currently working on writing scripts to automate and test their websites before and after each of their updates. It has been very technical and I’ve learned a lot. The first couple weeks were mostly training but not that I’ve gotten past that, I’ve begun to really enjoy working with my coworkers and doing my work.
Please be praying for opportunities to share my faith at work. It can be difficult to really get to know them as most people work remotely.
What are you learning about in the program?
Never before have I been surrounded with so many people of are so ready and eager to pour out their wisdom and invest in my life.
Learning under Tim Henderson is such a blessing. I don’t know anyone else who knows their bible as well as he does. There have been numerous times where he has explained a passage in scripture and I get this moment where everything clicks and I see that passage in an entirely new way.
The Bible tells one overarching story about God’s love for us through his son Jesus. We are practicing reading scripture though a Christocentric lens, with Christ as the main character instead of ourselves (us-ocentric).
What is God teaching you?
Where should I start? The last two months have been some of the best months of my entire life. God has blessed, encouraged, and strengthened me in so many ways. It has been so spiritually rich. I’m not sure if there has been a time in my life where I was so excited to learn about God’s word and build my relationship with Him. It is so clear that God has built us for relationship with Him and wants us to simply enjoy Him.
In seminary class, we are learning about how to take a biblical passage, truly study and learn what it means both to the original audience but also to a modern audience, then how to take what we’ve learned and be able to teach or preach it to those around us through word ministry. I am so grateful for the new strategies and abilities I’ve learned through the class so I can become a better teacher, leader, and husband (very soon).
Through our bible studies throughout the week, we are learning how to see Christ in all passages. Recently, we dove into the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. We learned how God sought her out. He didn’t just happen to pass by and hope that the woman would start a meaningful conversation with him. He went to HER. He listened to her, cared for her, sought her out, and offered her living water. It’s such a beautiful story, not only about how Jesus cares for the lowest of low, but how He actively seeks his people out. He wants all people to come to Him, not just the Jews or a certain class. God’s wants all people to experience His mercy and love so He sent His son Jesus to die for us.
Just as God sought us out when we were sinners and wanted nothing to do with Him, God has been working in my heart to be actively seeking out those around me to share his Gospel and love with. It may not be enough to simply pass by and hope they see that I’m a nice guy and maybe see Jesus in me. God wants us to seek people out, to GO and make disciples regardless who who that person is, what they have done, or how unlovable we may think they are. However, thankfully, it is not our power or will that saves people but only the work of the LORD who gives us the honor or partnering with Him in His global mission of grace for all people.
Luke 19 : 9 – 10
9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Romans 5 : 6 – 8
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
September 2024
Blue Ridge Fellows 2024-2025
What an exciting start of the program!
First off, thank you so much for your prayers and support. I could not be here without people like you who are willing to invest in my life and in God’s Kingdom.
- Cody Buchan (Leader) holding baby Peter
- Tim Henderson (Leader)
- Megan Buchan (Leader)
- Kellie Henderson (Leader)
- Abby Van Winkle (Fellow)
- Emmie Lo (Fellow)
- Caroline Crawford (Fellow)
- Emily Cargo (Fellow)
- Joey Desai (myself, Fellow)
- and Caleb Meyer (Fellow)
As we spent the first couple weeks together, it became so clear that God has brought each one of us, from various backgrounds and stories, to learn and serve together for the next 9 months. It has been so cool to see how we come from all over the country with all different backgrounds but we immediately have become such great friends. We are so blessed to see be able to learn and serve side by side and walk through everything God has in store for us. I look forward to countless more lessons and adventures with these guys!
1st Week of Fellows
The first week of the program was pretty chill, focused on getting to know each other, and learning about everything we will do over the next couple semesters.
As I said above, it was so cool to see how each one of us fellows come from a different place in life but God has brought us all HERE to learn and be equipped to serve him.
I started the week not knowing anyone and with lots of questions about the program. I ended the week with multiple new friends and a good grasp on everything we were going to do over the next couple semesters… and I couldn’t be more excited. God is going to do so much in our lives and I can’t wait to learn everything He has in store for me.
We also had the opportunity to take a boat out on Smith Mountain Lake. We enjoyed a day of tubing, swimming, and karaoke!
Job Placement
As you may know, a big aspect of the Blue Ridge Fellows Program is finding fellows local Jobs where they can build their career and practice living out their faith.
At Virginia Tech, I studied Computer Science and found that I really enjoy the front end aspect of web development. After some networking, I was offered a position with Carilion Clinic on their Web Development team! I just finished my first full week and have mostly been doing training and orientations but I am very excited to be working on the Web Dev team because it is exactly what I want to be doing long term. Everyone here is very welcoming and I look forward to getting to know everyone more as the year goes on.
What do we do in the program?
Fellows are busy people, but our schedules are filled with opportunities to serve others and learn more about God.
On Mondays, we don’t work out jobs but take time to learn how to live our faith out at work in the mornings. Monday afternoons, we take our seminary classes. This year we are taking Biblical Exposition. We’re only a couple week in but I can already tell its going to be so good.
Tuesdays to Friday we work our jobs as normal. Tuesday evenings we gather to tackle the hardest, deepest questions we can imagine and seek answers to the in God’s word.
Wednesday nights we study God’s word specifically looking at how all of scripture points towards Jesus and God’s over arching plan to restore His relationship with us.
Thankfully, we have Saturdays to take a breather (and go see Hannah for myself) but Sundays we go right back to it serving in our local church in the morning and evenings, investing in the children that come week after week.
The picture on the left is all the many readings we are going through. I don’t know if I’ve ever read so much in my life!
What is God Teaching Me?
God has been so good to me. He has been working in my heart in so many ways. Throughout the summer, the dependance on him to provide funding for the program and missions trip really tested my faith. Being the big God he is, he blew any expectation I had out of the water and provided abundantly the funds needed for the program.
Every talk and bible study we have, God seems to open up the scriptures in a new way. Our seminary class as well is teaching me new ways to study the scriptures in depth in ways I never have before. Never before have I seen so many ways that God uses stories, geology, genealogies, and poetry to point us to Christ.
If I were to pick one thing that God has taught me this month, it would be how I can trust Him even in the unknown. Whether it’s with finances, job placement, reading assignments, or just anxiousness about the program in general. In each case, God has proven not only that He is holding me in His hand, but He assures me that this is exactly where He wants me. He makes it obvious over and over again that His plan is so much higher than ours. He continues to provide and put specific pieces in place to allow me to participate in the program and be better equipped to serve Him. I am so excited to see what else He does over these next several months. I appreciate your prayers as God continue to challenge and teach me in new ways.
Philippians 2 : 5 – 11
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Summer 2024
Preparing for Blue Ridge Fellows
Looking back over this year, I can’t help be notice the many ways God has been carefully directing me in his plan. I thought I would finish my time at Virginia Tech, move to Northern Virginia, and start my career with an excellent job. About a month before graduation, I was told the job wouldn’t work out and I found myself frantically searching for a job. I heard about Blue Ridge Fellows last Fall but didn’t think I could commit to it since I had already signed a job offer with the company in NOVA.
One day, Tim Henderson called me, not knowing that my job offer fell through, and asked if anything had changed or if I wanted to reconsider the fellows program. It was so very clear that this was the direction God wanted me to pursue.
The fellows program will give me an opportunity to gain expereince in Web Development but more importantly, will prepare and equip me for every good thing that God has for me in the coming years. I’m excited to take seminary classes, and truly dig into the word of God to prepare me for service in his church, in my family, and in all my relationships.
Raising Support
As many of you know, the cost to do the fellows program is $6900
This number was big and scary at first but I quickly learned that we serve a BIG and GENEROUS God who loves to provide for his children. If I had to raise the money in my own power, I would never be in the program as I am today. Thanks to God and YOUR generous support, we have raised every cent needed to participate in the program. Fundraising this summer alone has taught me so many things about God, community, and the importance of putting our faith in his power and not my own.
Thank you all SOOOOO much for your generous support. I couldn’t be here without you guys. I’m so blessed to have people like you who are willing to invest in what God is doing. May God bless you for your generous support and investment in God’s Kingdom.
Oh! I also got ENGAGED this Summer!
Hannah and I got engaged on July 10th, 2024!
We’ll be getting married in December later this year.
